How would you describe your personal style, and how does denim fit into that?

Its so hard to describe my ever changing style. Bold simplicity is one way to describe my style. I love a statement piece that creates a cool silhouette. Denim is a staple in my wardrobe though. I love playing with different shapes like a wide leg or a straight leg. Whether its a jacket, a top or some jeans, denim is timeless.

At the finalist shoot, tell us why you styled yourself the way you did?

I wanted to show my bold simplicity by using subversive basics like my vest top and dark wash baggy jeans to give it a more 2000’s inspired vibe. I thought my jewelry and bold lip showed off my more bold side perfectly. This outfit is a scorpio as an outfit, its really me.

What do you think sets you apart from the other finalists?

I have such a passion for this crazy industry. I understand that you can create a feeling for the audience with modeling just like acting. I’m so ready to prove you can do anything if you put your mind to it and work hard. I know imposter syndrome is something a lot of people can struggle with, especially in this industry. But I’ve grown so much with my confidence and realizing I do deserve to be working with other models, even if I am new to the game.

Can you share a personal story or experience that has helped shape who you are today?

I don’t think my interests have always been something everyone has been into. I’m definitely one of those dreamer girls. I’ve had so many different hobbies throughout my life but I’ve found a main love for fashion and vintage. I just want to live my life freely and not worry about being “realistic” with my dreams. You have to be your biggest supporter in this life, that’s what I live by.

How would you describe your personal style, and how does denim fit into that?

I would describe my personal style as mostly earthy, boho and then sometimes that is mixed in with a little early 2000s and a dabble of subversive basics. I find that my personal style is definitely based upon my mood where my body becomes the canvas for the emotion that I am trying to portray. I think that denim fits into my personal style through my like for early 2000s style, I am a lover of low-rise jeans and an unconventional top.

Can you share a personal story or experience that has helped shape who you are today?

I think that something I had to overcome was my social anxiety. I have spent a lot of my life in my own world, hidden behind books and what not simply out of fear of the unknown. I have worked hard into building the confidence and self-esteem I needed to step into the world as my own individual that was not only genuine but also inspiring for others and I find that beautiful. Being able to embrace my insecurities and see them as traits that I am proud of is a part of my own personal journey of acceptance and self-love.

How do you see the role of fashion in promoting inclusivity and diversity?

I see the role of fashion in promoting inclusivity and diversity through representation. I think of models as the canvas and fashion as the art, and through diversification of not only the canvas but through the incorporation of cultural inspirations. Fashion being inclusive and having diversity allows others to see themselves as their own canvas and challenges the idea of conventionality which I feel like is the whole purpose of fashion.

What do you hope to achieve through your modeling career, and how do you see yourself making a positive impact in the world?

I hope to achieve a positive impact and outlook on others through my modeling career. I want to be the person that someone looks at and is inspired to do the thing that they love or invoke the desire for people to be themselves without fear of being different. I see myself making a positive impact in the world by highlighting the unique traits that make me different and putting them on blast so that people who look like me can see that we are able to do what we put our minds to.

What inspired you to enter this competition?

Well first off — I love fashion and Abrand Jeans makes incredible pieces. Additionally, I recently started modeling full-time and I thought it’d be an amazing opportunity to expand on my modeling career. I just genuinely thought it’d be a fun learning experience if not anything else!

How would you describe your personal style, and how does denim fit into that?

I feel like I have different outfits based on my moods and locations — sometimes very feminine other times extremely edgy. I love vintage and thrifted pieces and try to incorporate at least one in all my outfits. Either way, denim is a staple in my closet that goes with any style or mood — no matter what I want to wear I know denim can be a part of the look.

At the finalist shoot, tell us why you styled yourself the way you did.

I absolutely adore matching sets, and I also have really developed a liking for styling thrifted vests the past couple years so when I saw a denim vest and low rise jeans in the same denim wash it just made so much sense to me. And obviously don’t forget to accessorize! I paired it with a pink heel and shoulder purse for a pop of color and a feminine flair to the Canadian tuxedo/cowgirl vibe as well as tons silver jewelry.

What do you hope to achieve through your modeling career, and how do you see yourself making a positive impact in the world?

Growing up, I never saw someone who looked like me in ads and magazines and it made me feel like I wasn’t beautiful or worthy and that I could never model myself. I hope that young girls will see my face and feel like they not only have a place in the fashion industry, but that their Eastern features are beautiful in a Western world and beyond that. I also want to emphasize that beauty is not just physical but it comes from within — through love, passion, humility, and kindness.

At the finalist shoot, tell us why you styled yourself the way you did?

I felt that this shoot was about feeling confident and expressing a look that was uniquely me. This in mind, I opted for a pair of low-rise slouch jeans, which are my go-to favourites and was a choice that felt really authentic to me. I paired them with a simple black tank and elevated the look with a spiky bun, pendant necklace, and denim kitten heels. I am so happy with the outcome, even though I was so far from home in a completely new setting, the photos still captured my personality and style and felt true to me.

What do you think sets you apart from the other finalists?

The most obvious distinction is that I am the only Australian finalist and have been loving and wearing Abrand Jeans for a while. However, I believe the most important thing that sets me apart from any competition is my strength.  Despite the challenges I have faced for being different, I have come to know and accept myself fully, which has given me a unique sense of confidence. Being transgender has greatly contributed to my personal growth and eventually my self-confidence - as I have had to love myself harder and with more resilience than most. I am a very determined and strong minded person, which I believe makes me special and helps me present to the world in a more authentic and vulnerable way.

How do you see the role of fashion in promoting inclusivity and diversity?

Ultimately, I hope that as an openly trans person in the modeling industry, I can have a positive impact for not just the trans community but also for the general education and understanding for the wider community. Alex Consani, Valentina Sampaio and many other trans models have been so influential and I am hopeful that I can have a similar impact on other young people in the future.

Can you share a personal story or experience that has helped shape who you are today?

As a kid I was very aware that I was different to my peers. I struggled at school and was undeniably unhappy living the way I was. At 14 years old I began my transition, it has been the most difficult thing I’ve had to overcome. I've been judged and ridiculed for the way I look but ironically I now pursue a career in modeling - an industry that is generally based on someone’s physical appearance. This career path is so important to me, not to validate my appearance or disprove people from my past, but to demonstrate that being transgender and being so content in who you are is not just ok but can be both desirable and marketable in this world. Finally at 21 years old I can say I am the happiest I’ve ever been. Modeling was always a goal for me and I am so proud of myself for taking risks trying to achieve amazing things!

What inspired you to enter this competition?

Even when I was living in China, I wanted to be a model. In the past, I've had a lot of people turn me down because I don't have the "look" they're looking for. I want the opportunity to demonstrate my abilities to others

At the finalist shoot, tell us why you styled yourself the way you did?

I styled the finalist shoot the way I did because denim on denim is a 90's style that I thought would be great to pair with for a photoshoot with a 90's theme. I also have red hair, which I thought would complement the top nicely.

Can you share a personal story or experience that has helped shape who you are today?

I was bullied my entire life. In the orphanage, the kids at school would make fun of me for wearing secondhand clothes and would always ridicule me for not having parents. The kids here made fun of me because of my accent, my eyes, or the fact that I don't look like my parents. All of the things I was bullied about are things I can't change. My mother taught me that it is never about how you appear on the outside, but how you are on the inside. You can change the way you dress or look, but at the end of the day, the only person you need to please is yourself. Don't let other people define who you are as a person.

How do you plan to use this opportunity to further your career and personal goals?

I'd like to take advantage of this opportunity to show people that even if you're born with nothing, you can still make a life for yourself. This opportunity would also open up a lot of doors for me in my modeling career.

What inspired you to enter this competition?

If I’m being honest, I entered this competition on a whim and quite last minute! I decided to take a chance and posted a TikTok when the model search visited NYC. I was so surprised, but super grateful to be chosen!

What do you think sets you apart from the other finalists?

Being 28, I think I bring a level of experience and maturity to the competition.  My mom raised me as a single parent, so I feel like I have a different level of determination and drive that was instilled in me while growing up.

How would you describe your personal style, and how does denim fit into that?

I would describe my style as “model of duty”, with a side of fun. I love accessorizing with bright colors and statement pieces, while the core of my outfit is more laid back/chic. Denim is a staple in my wardrobe and I love how versatile it can be when I’m dressing up or down. Having a few pairs of well-fitting jeans is basically a requirement for models for castings, so denim plays a huge part in my career, as well!

How do you see the role of fashion in promoting inclusivity and diversity?

To me, fashion should reflect and be applicable to everyone - it should have no boundaries. I think all different types of people and cultures should be represented and celebrated in the fashion industry, and as far as we have progressed on this front, there is always work and improvements to be made.
